“There we go.” Sakura turned herself into the spitting image of Fandal with transformation jutsu, put a hand on her hip, and turned toward Sasuke. “Okay, your turn.”

“I’m transforming too?” he asked.

“That way’s safer.”

The strategy was simple.

Sakura would be the prime minister’s envoy, meet with Zansul, and buy time while she tried to get information on Map of the Heavens and the prime minister’s plans. During that time, Sasuke would sneak into the basement and find exactly what was going on down there. They would each handle any problems that came up on their own. Later, they would use genjutsu on Fandal and make him believe he had met with Zansul before sending him back to the capital.

“I guess it’s got to be this if you’re going to transform.” Sakura held out Fandal’s staff. Since changing size cost chakra, the best plan was for Sasuke to turn into something as close to his actual height as possible.

“This?” He looked skeptical.

It was more difficult to transform into an inorganic object than a person. He’d turned himself into a shuriken and a kunai before, but a staff was a first.

He’d give it a try.

After touching it several times to check the material, Sasuke worked his chakra.

Pop!

He turned into an exact copy of the staff and clattered to the floor.

“Perfect,” Sakura said as she picked him up.

He felt sort of strange, but with this their preparations were complete. Now to go and face the director.

Tapping the staff/Sasuke on the floor, Sakura mimicked Fandal’s mannerisms and movements as she climbed the stairs. She knocked on the heavy door of the director’s office and announced herself.

Zansul poked his head out the door and invited Sakura inside without the slightest hesitation.

For Sasuke, who so often worked alone on missions outside the village, it was a novel thing to work a mission with a comrade. He couldn’t imagine getting this close to a difficult enemy so easily on his own.

Zansul urged Sakura to take a seat on the sofa and sat down in an armchair opposite it. Further back, there was a desk with a modern design that seemed very un-Redaku-like.

This was Zansul’s study.

As far as she could tell from investigating it in advance with her chakra, there was a bedroom further back, separated by a transom with no door, and somewhere in that bedroom, there was a door to the staircase that led to the basement.

“And how is the prime minister?” Zansul asked placidly as he leaned back in a leisurely manner. “It’s been over six months since we last met.”

“He’s quite well,” Sakura replied. “As is Queen Marina.”

“Wonderful. I suppose she’s accustomed to her official duties by now.”

Once they had exchanged their lighthearted greetings, Sakura casually turned her gaze toward the window.

“Oh dear. It seems as though it rained, hm?”

“What?” Zansul stood up and looked outside.

The moment his gaze was elsewhere, Sakura tossed the cane forward along the floor. It slid soundlessly across the shaggy rug and stopped just before the boundary between study and bedroom.
